I am Sushma Devi, and my story began in a small village called Maira, Tehsil – Akhnoor, in Jammu, India. Like many women in my village, life was often a struggle, shackled by economic hardships and societal rules that confined my potential. My husband worked tirelessly as a laborer for a vegetable wholesaler, and it seemed we barely scraped by. As our children’s educational needs grew, it became clear that we needed more than just survival—it was time for change.

Determined to contribute, I made the courageous choice to work outside my home. But stepping into the world beyond my doorstep wasn’t easy. Coming from a traditional background, I faced harsh criticism from my community. The unspoken rules were evident: women were expected to remain in the shadows, not pursue careers, let alone start a business. Yet, I felt an undeniable pull to break free from those constraints, to embrace a leadership role that could change not just my life but the lives of those around me.

When my husband joined Nature Bio-Foods Ltd. – Fair Farming Foundation, he brought home an opportunity that would change our lives forever: Gender Leadership Training funded by the Fairtrade Premium project. My heart raced with the possibility of lifting our family out of poverty. I saw this not just as training, but as a chance to reshape my identity and empower other women in my village.

Over the course of three transformative months, I dived into learning sewing and boutique management. Equally important, I gained invaluable insights into financial independence and business management. But perhaps most crucial was the newfound confidence that bloomed within me. I could feel my mindset shift—I began to believe in my own potential. With each stitch I sewed during training, I stitched together dreams, confidence, and the determination to forge my own path.

Armed with knowledge and courage, I rented a small shop and launched ‘Sushma Boutique.’ This was more than a business; it was a beacon of hope for the women in my community. I was proving that we could defy the odds. Every piece of clothing I crafted was a testament to my transformation. My boutique soon became a vibrant hub filled with beautiful women’s apparel and buzzing with orders, pulling in an income of Rs. 12,000 to 15,000 INR per month. Not only could I provide a quality education for my children, but I also earned the pride of being an equal partner in my household.

What’s truly remarkable is that my journey inspired two other women from my village to pursue their dreams! With the support of the Fairtrade Premium Project, they opened their own boutiques, creating a ripple effect of empowerment. Our fight for independence became a collective journey of women reclaiming their rights to thrive.

Today, I witness the transformation within our producer organization as more women step into economic roles. The fire of ambition ignited within us is breaking barriers and reshaping what it means to be a woman in our community.

My success story has sparked a movement. Women who once felt they were destined for dependence are now envisioning a future where they contribute meaningfully to their families. As more women embrace entrepreneurship and skill-based training, our cooperative is changing. The dynamics of gender roles shift with each woman who dares to dream big.

Since I completed my training, my life has been a whirlwind of personal and professional growth. I transformed from a homemaker constrained by financial limitations into an independent entrepreneur and role model. There were times I felt overwhelmed, yet every challenge fueled my determination. I found strength in the success of the women around me, and I was determined to break those stereotypes.

Looking back, I see how far I’ve come. I have stepped out of societal shadows and into a spotlight that now shines on many women in my village. Financial independence has granted me a voice in important family and community decisions. My story serves as proof that with determination and support, we can shatter barriers and initiate change.

Looking ahead, I plan to expand my boutique and create more job opportunities for other women from my village. Ultimately, I want to forge a women-led business network in our region, one that fosters gender equality while driving economic growth.
